TH1034 Catholic Faith/ Married and Religious Vocation
Rationale for the course (Why is this course in the curriculum?)
Senior Theology reviews the teachings of the Catholic Church, re-acquaints them with the Scripture and gives the student the opportunity to analyze and synthesize the theological information they have collected. Hopefully this will prepare them to live their life of faith as an adult in the vocation to which they respond.
Objectives of the course (What should I expect to learn by the end of the course?)
Upon completion of the course, the student will demonstrate the ability to:
- read and interpret the Bible using scholarly resources and methods
- Define and understand frequently used theological vocabulary of the Catholic faith
- Understand and appreciate the structure and use of the Lectionary
- Use the Catechism of the Catholic Church to find answers to questions of doctrine and teachings of the Church
- Use scriptural resources such as lexicons, concordances, etc.
Strategies
for learning (How will I go about learning this material?)
While lecture is the main format of the course; group work, video and computer lab visits are also included. Assignments and material to be covered will be given in a hand-out and will be posted on my webpage Assignments are to be completed by the assigned due date. A penalty of 5 percentage points a day will be imposed for late assignments. After initial presentation of the basic material students will be expected to do the assigned readings and be prepared to discuss together as a class to share our learning.
Conferences
with students regarding class matters are welcomed and encouraged. My office is
on the second floor across from the chapel 230A. Students wishing to discuss
grades, whether on individual assignments or progress reports, etc. must come
to my office. I am available in my office by
Students in TH1034 are required to do outside reading. Articles from catholic periodicals will be assigned for reading and reflection on occasion. Students will research various theological terms to be reviewed and discussed in class.

Evaluation of student learning (How will I know if I'm learning the material?)
- You will have feedback in every class on your comprehension by how well you understand the homework material and are able to participate in class discussion. Periodic quizzes will provide feedback on specific sections of the material. Larger tests will provide feedback on how well you can integrate the material learned during a given unit.
- Grades are based on the following components:

- Please note that attendance is part of your grade. Most college visits are over by now and repeated absence, especially when this class is scheduled first, could have a negative effect on your grade. YOU are responsible for getting “what we did” on the day you are absent/late. Please do not come to me with your attendance slip and ask if “we did anything yesterday”, getting the notes will be YOUR responsibility – and usually there will be notes. If you miss a part of a video- it is YOUR responsibility to find out what happened. Because you “didn’t see that part” will not be an acceptable excuse on a quiz or test.
- Only ONE low homework grade will be dropped at the end of progress report period or a quarter. Specific dates for quizzes/tests will be given every few weeks. They are on the syllabus hand-out. Note them – and be prepared.
